![]() Not too long ago - a year or two back - I read a novel that was translated from German. The sentences drove me nuts also, and I think that whoever did the translation mostly just translated directly from Polish instead of making changes to make the text flow better to English readers. These books weren’t written by an English speaker and were translated from Polish. I gave up quickly on the Witcher when I couldn’t get into the first book. It’s a translation issue, I’m pretty sure. I’m in the last fifth of ToC and I think I may just drop it. And was it just me, or was the addition of the Wild Hunt unnecessary and really contrived and pointless? Only fools and dullards would be shocked by the twists. The stuff about the mages was enjoyable, but Sapkowski did not fully utilise it to build up towards the big twist at the end (which was rubbish because it only involved characters that were, at this point, only names on a page). However, Sapkowski’s clunky prose is still an issue, as is the lack of a clear story. Time of Contempt improves on the descriptions far more and is far less dry. The bits I liked (the carriage subplot and Yen and Ciri at the end) felt completely detached from one another and would’ve worked far better as individual short stories. Blood of Elves may just be one of if not the worst book I have ever read. I loved the short stories, and I was very excited to read the books.
